have already been removed even though I have just reinstalled it. Any help on
this appreciated.
Thank you.

Hi Maurice N,
I would like to thank you for your response.
My reason for uninstalling SP2 is, because of a few computer problems, I am
attempting to do a repair install, but am getting windows setup stating
"setup cannot continue because your version of windows is newer than on the
disk". Therefore am attempting to temporarily uninstall SP2 in order to get
back original version and then reinstall. Would you possibly be able to shed
any light to this problem.
Thanks again.

For the time being, I'd have you check on exactly what version of XP this is.
From Start menu button, select RUN option. Then type in

winver <press Enter-key>

There will be a long display of Version number
what does your Windows Version & build show as ? (that l-o-n-g string Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx)

Does the build string show service pack 1 or service pack 2?

Indication is that this has xp service pack 2.
Suggest you table the idea of un-installing or repairing XP.

What "is" the bottom line problem ? and provide enough detail.

Review & study the following MS article
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/900910/en-us

I think you may need to run XP's System File Checker. But seeing how you do not seem to have an integrated CD of XP & SP2, you would need to select either method 1 or method 2 in the article.

From XP menus, select "Command Prompt". (or from Run menu, type
CMD <enter-key>

in the command prompt window type
SFC /SCANNOW <enter-key>

That would get System File Checker running, and recheck your versions of Windows system files

Hi again Maurice
Very much appreciate your interest and patience with my computer problem.
I have solved the original problem which accidently lead me to the SP2
problem, therefore repair installing became unnecessary. Other than that the
computer works fine so I'll just have to learn to live with an "Unmoveable
SP2", (like a spare tire that never wears out). Thanks again for your help
and expertise. Have a great 2006.
