Hi, I have two hardrives, there is nothing on the secondary (slave) I want to
put it in another computer so I removed it. XP is on the primary and that
drive (C) is set to master. When I remove 2nd drive, windows won't boot? I
put it back it will? I uninstalled it in device manager first but still no
luck. What's up? thanks!

Is this a question or is it a statement? If it is a statement
then you need to tell us exactly what happens during the
boot process, how far it goes and what messages you
see on the screen.

It is a question of WHAT TO DO TO FIX IT! The message says boot from cd
insert system disk. Thanks

Well, a little bit more information would be helpful in getting to a
fix. What is meant that Drive (C) is set to Master? Did you actually
reset Drive C to Master or was it that way in the computer? IOW, some
HD's, especially those from Western Digital, is set unjumpered when it
is the single HD at the end of the IDE cable.

Yeah that's the way it was originally before I installed 2nd drive, it was
side ways over 2 pins? Can't remember what 2? Thanks!

No! There is no diagram on the wd harddrive for "unjumpered" I remember it
was horizontal over 2 pins instead of vertical but do not know which 2?
Thanks!

If the drive is a Western Digital

If not, search the drive manufacturer site for jumper settings.

Note: normally most WD drives don't require a jumper installed in a single drive system. Additionally verify that your bios is set to boot from the remaining drive.

There are different makes of Western Digital Drives, some with 3 pairs
of pins and others with 5 pairs of pins. And there should be a jumpering
diagram on the top of the hard drive. However, "unjmpered" also means no
jumpers at all; the horizontal jumpering position is used as a "parking"
position for the jumper.

I see a lot of guesses and stuff, but IMO this is more likely:

You might have to check the jumper settings on the drive. Some systems,
when you set the drive for Master, require there to be a Slave. There
should be a jumper setting for using it as the only drive in the system;
find that and set it.

Check with your drive manufacturer's web site to get the jumper settings for
your drive brand and model. OR, look closely on the drive; very often the
jumper settings are indicated on a small label near the jumper area.

Also, check your system BIOS to be sure that drive C is set as the second
boot device if you have a CD drive, otherwise the first boot device.
Unlikely to be the problem, but still worth checking.
While you're there, remove the second drive if it's still listed. If
it's still there, the system could still be looking for it and generating
errors.

Western Digital Jumpers..(not a guess)
