What is the procedure to uninstall 2000 and then install xp? I do not want
to do a reformat and would like save things like programs and data.

Boot to the xp cd and follow the on screen instructions. Choose to do an
upgrade install.
(note: if this is an oem version of xp, you cannot do an upgrade install,
format is the only option)

Then do it as an upgrade. Run an XP Pro Upgrade CD from your Win2000;
take Install, continue with the default Update
