Scroll down to the indexing service, double-click it's entry, you'll see
where you can stop the service and disable it if you wish. Indexing
doesn't wreck systems and remove files, so I can't answer the last part
of your question. You haven't provided any information about what's
happening.

When indexing was on my pictures had all gone to "indexing"
and had different names and were unstructured. I'm relieved to have them
back.
