When you install Outlook, you can't just start it up and have it work without
specifying a mail address, servers for incoming and outgoing mail, etc. The
information is available from your ISP (internet service provider). Was this
done?
Just like any other software, before you can use Outlook, it must be
configured. The configuration is stored in what is called "Outlook Profile".
Kathleen is correct, ask your internet provider for the settings.
Go to the Control Panel and double-click on the Mail applet. When you say you
use Outlook for other things, are you using it for calendaring, journalling,
etc.?
Of course. Email is the only feature in Outlook which requires
configuration. You can use the rest of the features such as Calendar,
Journal, Notes, and Contacts, without configuring anything.
Who's your internet provider? Verizon? Check out the following:
Final question. Can I make newgroups appear in Outlook?
Only with an Exchange server configured to put newsgroups in public folders
or commercial NNTP add-ins like this: http://www.mapilab.com/outlook/nntp/ .
