Unexplained volume changes

Hi everyone! Sometimes, when I boot my computer, my sound is loud! I adjust
the settings and the next time it is booted, it may be loud again. This
doesn't happen every time I turn it on but at random and I haven't done
anything to make it happen. I click on my volume icon on the taskbar and it
shows all my volume settings wide open. I adjust the settings and close it up
and it will be okay for a while but then again for no reason, I will boot up
and it is loud! Sometimes when I boot up, I don't have any sound at all. I go
to the volume controls and the wave volume is muted. In fact, this happened
again this morning. I go in and make the needed changes and it will work for
a while but tomorrow it may be muted again. I haven't a clue as to how it
gets this way. I have a SoundBlaster 5.1 sound card. Does anyone here have
any ideas as to what can be causing this and how to fix it? I have updated
the drivers, etc. but that didn't help. I'm using Windows XP Pro. Thanks for
your time. Kathy

Kathy,

One thing to consider is reinstall the devices drivers. To do this, go to
control panel then system. Select the tab labelled hardware, then click the
button titled device manager. Once device manager loads, go into sound,
video and game controllers and find your SoundBlaster Audio Card from the
list. Then, double click on it, and go to the tab labelled Driver across the
top. Select uninstall driver. After the machine completes the uninstall, go
back into the device and at the first screen, click the button titled either
reinstall driver or install driver.

Let me know if that works, if it doesn't, I will try something else.

I uninstalled my drivers and installed them again but it didn't help. My
volume controls were as they should be untill I rebooted. Then, they were
wide open and I hadn't touched them. Thanks for trying! Kathy
