Unexpected system shutdown

Steve

My server is having unexpected system shutdowns about
every ten days.
Advanced server 2000 with 1G memory. Dual Processors
Pentium III.
Raid Three Array with 3G virtual memory, 20GB spare HD
space.
Any clues as to what to check.
The driver detected that the device \Device\Harddisk0\DR0
has its write cache enabled. Data corruption may occur.
error message just before shutdown I think
The previous system shutdown at 6:21:12 PM on 1/21/2004
was unexpected.
error message in system log after shutdown I presume

To be able to see the blue screen stop message; Control
Panel|System|Advanced|Startup and Recovery, I usually like to uncheck
"Automatically reboot" this way you get a chance to read the stop error.

If no BSOD's occur, then it may be a power problem. I would look at a
possible faulty (or undersized) pc power supply, UPS, bad battery, or the
circuit feeding the outlet that the pc is plugged into.

First of all, check the time/date stamp of the error you posted. As I
recall, Windows does not want you running a hard drive with the write cache
enabled on a system that is running AD. If there were a problem with the
system and the cache had not been written to the hard drive, AD could be
irreversibly corrupted. If this is a DC, then it should be disabled. go into
Device Manager and make sure that it's turned off for the drive.

As to the re-boot, I'd first check out the UPS (you do have one attached,
don't you??). We had a similar situation and it went away after I installed
a new UPS.

I am having the same sort of problems. The details from the EventLog
are (no other faulty entries):

EventID: 6008

The previous system shutdown at 1:12:01 PM on 2/10/2004 was
unexpected.

0000: d4 07 02 00 02 00 0a 00 Ô.......
0008: 0d 00 0c 00 01 00 77 01 ......w.
0010: d4 07 02 00 02 00 0a 00 Ô.......
0018: 0b 00 0c 00 01 00 77 01 ......w.

I've checked the PSU and I've changed the power plug used. Moreover it
looks like it is happening every month almost in the same day, but
there are exceptions (the last time I've got it after 6 days only).

I have Auto-Reboot desable, no Scheduled Tasks, no Screen Savers, no
Power Save enabled and no idea why this is happening.

OS: Win2k Adv.Server + SP4

Still looking for ideas, @
