Unexpected shutdown and restart

Phyllis

Am having numerous unexpected Windows XP Home Edition
shutdowns and restarts. Shuts down in all programs and
Internet Explorer. No hard drive problem. How do I make
Windows XP Home more stable? Shuts down an average of
every half hour. I lose all unsaved work. Thanks.

you might try this - ie
go start/right click - my computer/properties/
go - advanced tab/startup and recovery section/
go - settings/system failure section/
go - deselect - automatically restart/
go ok/
go apply/
and take it fr there

Hi,

Those steps should produce an error message, if it is indeed a software
problem. Knowing what the error message states may help towards resolving
the problem. Also start/run eventvwr.msc and check the system logs for clues
as to what is going on.

It is also possible that this is an overheating problem. I consider this a
strong possibility due to the stated random nature of the unexpected
shutdowns. Random reboots are often a sign of overheating. Things you can
do:

1) Open the case and make sure all fans are operating, especially the cpu
fan. While you're in there, get a can of compressed air and blow out the
dust bunnies.

2) Make sure the drive tower is well ventilated and not stuck in some
department store computer desk pc cabinet with only a little vent hole in
the back.

3) Visit a local pc shop and have them add an intake or exhaust fan. This is
not something you should do on your own unless you are familiar with the air
circulation pattern inside your machine. Adding a fan can be
counterproductive if not done correctly.
