Unexpected System Shutdown.

Robert

A friend has tried to download and install AVC Anti-Virus+Firewall.
After shutting down Windows Firewall he completed the download when the
(WinXP Home) System announced a shut-down in 60 seconds because
instructed by "... NTAuthority\System." A further error message
appeared saying Windows must now restart because Remote Procedure Call
(RPC) Service was terminated unexpectedly. On rebooting manually the
Task Bar and Start button have disappeared. (No Taskbar settings have
been changed to cause this) and the system shuts down again two
minutes later. Some Windows functions work - My Computer, My Documents,
etc and Control Panel can be reached via these. Where should I begin,
please? All suggestions gratefully received.
Robert.

He has a virus/worm! Did he not patch the Windows installation? The
virus/worm is probably the Blaster/MSblater or Sasser worm. Running
without a firewall on an unpatched Windows NT machine is a sure fire way
to get infected! When was the last time that he patched the machine? A
fix for the gaping security hole was issued abour 3 years ago!
