Unexpected failure - help

Hi, I am running Windows XP on my home computer. I recently added some memory
to the computer and that seemed to speed everything up.

However, last time I switched it on, I got this message:

"We apologise for any inconvenience but Windows did not start successfully.
A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.
If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly or was
automatically shut down to protect files and folders, choose Last Known Good
Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked
If a previous start up attempt was interupted due to a power failure or
because the power or restart button was pressed or if you are not sure what
caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally."

It then gives me 5 choices:
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration
Start Windows Normally.

There is 30 seconds to choose before it selects an option automatically.

But when I select an option (or wait and let the timer expire) the computer
stops responding and fails to load at all. I have not been past this screen
the last few days.

I have tried removing and reinserting the memory stick, and I have also
removed it completely and then restarted the machine, but each time this
message comes up before I get to my logon screen.

I cannot, obviously, get onto the machine to remove or copy my files.

What can I do??? Please help.

Hi Ashley,
You may Fried a component on your Motherboard or your ESD (Electro Static
Descharge) did fried the Memory sticks and did the Memory matching the Old
one (I.E are they the same ), try to test if the Memory sticks aren't bad and
you did n't make something loose(like Data cable, Power cables) on your
motherboard and all cables connected firmly on the back of your computer.

Nash may be right, but the likely hood of the computer still booting with
such a problem is slim (Even if you did wipe the memory sticks with a static
cleaning cloth! - note DONT do this... it's a joke)

Your problem lies somewhere with the fact that XP went Unix style in which
in some cases it won't know that youve got extra ram unless it's told that
you have put some in (Although I have never experienced it I have read
something about it)

I sure youve already tried pullng the ram out and booting again to no
avail., and yes maybe you did fry something on the motherboard.

Try to start up a different operating system on a floppy disc, or bootable
CD to see if your computer is still working. (Maybe the XP install CD - just
don't install - maybe you could try a repair).

Other than that you will need help from a local PRO to get to your computer
to see what has gone wrong.
