Unexpected Error Occured: I/O error 6

A

AK

I am getting the above message when I try to open a file using the "Open"
command in PowerPoint 2000 (this is a new phenomenon). The file browser
popup window opens briefly, then closes and I get the above message.
Clicking "OK" leads to another message: "An error occurred while crating a
file dialog. Please save presentations, exit, and restart PowerPoint". The
same problem occurs even after restarting.

I have removed and reinstalled Office 2000, and the same problem occurs.

Also, PowerPoint suddenly seems to be taking minutes (literally about 5
minutes) to open.

Any ideas will be welcome!

Thanks

Alan

Glen:

Thanks for this help.

I was able to find the FAQ you pointed to, and resolve the problem.

The instructions are a little cryptic and quite alarming, as they seem to
indicate that you must erase the entire9.0 Key and that you will wipe out
all your settings. You may be interested to know that I was able to compare
the 9.0 key for PPT with Word and Excel, and noticed that the fifth hex
field was set at "00" instead of "14", in the
"Office\9.0\Common\Openfind\Microsoft PowerPoint\Settings\Open\View\Data"
field.

Changing it to "14" fixed the problem immediately.

many thanks

Alan,

Thanks for the feedback. It sounds like, based on your experience, deletion
of the key is not necessary, but changing it to an entry the same as other
Office programs fixes it.

Anyway, I am always hesitant about posting suggestion that affect the
registry, so I'm glad you got it sorted.
