Unexpected autoshape hiding

Every so often, as I am drawing autoshapes, I get a part of an autoshape get
hiden only around other autoshapes including on either side. It's hides at
the same point all across the document as if it's hiding along some line
number(s), but I don't want this behaviour. What needs to be done to
resolve this issue?

Pertinent settings:

Tools>Options>General
Automatically create drawing canvas when inserting AutoShapes (NOT
checkmarked)

Advanced Layout settings on AutoShapes:
Move object with text (Checkmarked)
Lock anchor (NOT checkmarked)
Allow overlap (Checkmarked)

2 additional things I have found with this.

This only happens under the HTML view, which is also the only view that I
know of that allows for viewing the document with the background having a
different fill color other than white.

I have seen it with lines too, but this seems to happen more so with 2-D
autoshapes including the freeform autoshape.

For background fill colors, I would set the default window setting for this,
but then it doesn't work out too well for certain files/programs. When
working on a 21" monitor on a system all day long (10.5+ hours), 5 days a
week, all of that white on the screen can get to the eyes, so I try to use
darker background colors with lighter font colors, but too bad, most
programs don't automatically recognize this.
