Within what program? In most programs, you toggle the Underline off/on
with the Underline button on the tool bar, or by pressing Ctrl/U. But
with Newsreaders, and text within OE and other text-based utilities
where html isn't used, you can preface the text with an underscore _then
remove the underscore_ when you want to turn the function off. If it
doesn't work with that particular program, at least you've somewhat
highlighted the text. As I typed the above, "then remove the
underscore" was not underlined, but it will possibly be underlined when
this is posted.

For better answers, specific to the program in question, please post the
details required, and possibly post to a news group that discusses that
utility. There are OE groups, Office and Word groups available on the
MS server.

In WordPad (the word processing program that ships with Windows) you
highlight the text and then click the 'U' in the toolbar, *or* you click
'U' before you start typing; then click it again to stop underlining.

Most word processing programs, such as Word, have a similar feature.

How would you underline text?

Barry,

I know you have asked questions before on these newsgroups - so you have to
know that is not enough information to actually and 100% accurately answer
your question. If one was to go JUST by what you have there - perhaps I
could give you this answer:

You have Windows XP with SP2. You wish to "underline text". That could
mean a few things.

Maybe you want to underline and single click all your items:
- Open Folder Options in Control Panel *or* in "My Computer", select
Tools --> Folder Options.
- On the General tab, under 'Click items as follows', select "Single-click
to open an item (point to select)
- Under that selection, choose the "underline" option you desire:
- Underline icon titles consistent with my browser.
- Underline icon titles only when i point at them.
- Click "OK" when you are done.

Maybe you are using Notepad or Wordpad (if all you have is Windows XP with
SP2) and you wish to underline items in your typed up documents in these
programs.
- You cannot in Notepad. It does not have features like this. You can get
many freeware applications that might. If you truly want features like
Microsoft Office - but don't like the price - try Open Office:
http://www.openoffice.org/
- In Wordpad - you can toggle the underline as you type by pressing CTRL+U.
This is the same for many programs that have this ability. Also - if you
highlight text and then press CTRL+U, it will underline the text you have
highlighted.

Maybe you are wanting to underline text in Internet Explorer (the links that
is.)
- In Internet Explorer, select Tools --> Internet Options.
- Look under the "Advanced" tab.
- Under the "Browsing" section, find the "Underline Links" section.
- Choose either "Always", "Hover" or "Never"
- Click on OK.

That's about as good as it gets. There are other ways to do some of the
things above - but without more information - those are the "underline"
references in a pure "Windows XP with SP2" installation.

Underlining text is a function of your word processing program, not
Windows. How to do it depends on what program you are using, and you
haven't told us.

However, you can try selecting the text, and pressing Ctrl-U, which is
a common way to do it.

I realize that most word processing programs have an underlining feature.
But what about pure text programs, like Notepad?

Thanks,

Barry Karas

Underlining is a type of formatting. By definition, plain text does not
have formatting. So the answer is no.

I suppose it's possible to tweak the registry, but that probably would
result in *all* text being underlined.

* The above web address link is given in two different forms. The shorter
form leads to the same place as the longer form. The shorter form was given
because of the way some newsreaders and such will wrap their text and thus
break the link someone is trying to give if it is over a certain number of
characters.
