Underline deleting...

Could someone please tell me how to remove an underline at
the bottom of the page from a saved document in Word 97?
I tried everything I can think of (i.e. borders and
shading, help, etc.) Word will not allow me to simply
highlight and backspace the underline. The underline was
created using shift and the underscore button on the
keyboard and then hitting return. Any help would be
GREATLY appreciated!
