unchangable file permissions...

hi guys, i have a problem with my file permissions within
my XP pro, i have a folder and sub folders that i want to
make "readable/writable" the thing is when you goto the
folder properties eg: right click the folder and bring up
the property panel at the bottom where the check box
says "read-only" it is greyed out with a check in it .. ok
cool so ill just click it and remove the "read-only"
access to this folder and all sub folders .. great it
works alittle changing things with the folder then when
its finished i click ok, and the property panel goes
away .. at this stage you would imagine that it would now
be fully writable and that would include all sub folders
as well the problem is if you go check the folder property
panel again the "read-only" box is still checked and
greyed out ..... any ideas as to wtf is going on would be
most greatfull for your time..

Check the NTFS permissions.
The ReadOnly checkbos on folders is use to set the
attribute on contained files. In NT/W2k/XP/W2k3
things are controlled using NTFS permissions, not
the old DOS attributes.

Thanks for sharing Roger, now willyou tell me how to do it? I did what
peterpan described, I also went into safe mode and took ownership. I stll
can't install a program because "access is denied" to the documents and
settings folder
btw the settings changed back when I got out of the properties window.

What settings changed back on leaving the property window ?
When you took ownership it should have offered to reset permissions
for you. If you let it, you ended up with a grant of Full control to the
Administrators groups and nothing else. In fact you usually need
grants other than that, but it depends on where the folder is.
If you did not let the process set permissions for you then the old
permissions were left alone as they were, but you now have the ability
to grant Administrators Full Control (as an added permission).

What application are you trying to install ?
Some apps have been seen to misbehave and give a message
like what you mention when it is really an incorrect registry setting
that is goofing the install up.
