Unbelievable Vista reactivation sensitivity

N

I can't believe how sensitive Vista is to changes now with respect to
re-activation ...

Get this - I installed an approved SATA driver update from Windows Update
and that was sufficient for invalidation of my existing license. No hardware
change - nada - just a simple driver update. Of course re-activation then
wouldn't work as the product was in use, so I then had to phone the help
line to re-activate.

If this is anything to go by I'm going to be spending more time on the phone
to MS activation support line than using the PC! I think they've gone well
overboard on this one ...

Couple of similar complaints here yesterday. I don't think its a case of MS
going overboard, I think the activation is just wrongly too sensitive at
this early stage. I would expect a patch soon for this.

They really don't have a solution yet other than calling them on the
telephone and my telephone is Skype (would not work) or an expensive cell
phone.

They better fix this problem quick, some companies like ATI have new device
drivers monthly!

Does look similar - the only caveat I guess is that it implies there's a fix
in Windows Update but if so either it's not a fix, or it's only specific to
the product referenced.

Fix KB931573 was the second one that went into my system, a full 24h prior
to applying the SATA update which prompted a re-activation.

I must admit I found the conditions upon which re-activation can be prompted
amusing though:

.. You install a device driver.
.. You install a program.
.. You run a new program.
.. You remove a program

Well, I updated the BIOS on my motherboard (Gigabyte GA-8N-SLI Royal) from
version F2 to version F6. I'm multi-booting with XP, Windows Server 2003
and Vista. Of all the OS installations on this computer (about 8
altogether), Vista was the ONLY installation that did NOT require
re-activation.

So, I'd say "it depends".

Same thing here,
All I did was overclock my cpu by the 10% option in bios and I had to
re-activate.
That is rediculous!

Yet another reason to wait on Vista. This, obviously, is not the fault
of third party software but Vista.

Like I always say -- and posts like this prove it -- MS' "anti piracy"
programs ONLY inconvenience the paying customer and do *nothing* to stop
the real pirates who just crack away and laugh.

You don't always say that. Sometimes you say other things.

Even so, Vista has certainly proved you right when you do say that.

I meant when referring to MS' silly and ineffective anti piracy programs.

Yep and I hope MS is listening but I am not holding my breath.

I did update my motherboards bios yesterday and also the chipset drivers and
HD drivers and then this morning I got the message that I needed to
reactivate windows. I tried to do it online but the message I got back was
that the registration number I was trying to activate was already being used
lol..of course it was , by me. So then I had to call and do it on the phone
and of course doing it that way brought me to a live operator as the
automated system couldn't verify my activation numbers...what a pain in the
ass. I concur with the person who said the pirates laugh at this stuff. I
have 2 partitions that have 2 legal OS's on them and I have to jump through
hoops now to keep this OS active.

Just what you needed when updating BIOS and such: another headache.
These ineffective and you-are-guilty-of-theft-until-you-prove-otherwise
programs are why I am learning Linux.

LOL! I wonder if MS will ever see the writing on the wall. I guess MS
lacks some kind of weatherman to know which way the wind blows.
