Unattended setup (few questions)

What *can* be done during unattended setup:

Destination drive partitioning,
Installing to a 2nd physical drive,
Changing default 'special' folders location ?

Is there a book covering the topic ?

Thanks.

Hi there

The drive partitioning options are somewhat limited in current products.
It's basically a choice of "leave alone", or "wipe the disk and create a
single volume".

As for partitioning info, you have an option called "autopartition", or the
choice is to let the user select at install-time.

You can change the Windows systemroot directory, Program Files, Documents
and Settings and probably more.

The best overall resource is probably the Windows 2000 Professional Resource
Kit or, I imagine, the XP Pro Resource Kit (haven't read it, personally).
If you look on the CD, there's actually a file called deploy.cab, which
contains a lot of documentation.

Once you've learnt the basics, there's some excellent work being done in
this area over at http://www.msfn.org/. Check out their forums and their
how-to guides. There are some brilliant tips and tricks there.

My, somewhat outdated, guide is at http://www.willowhayes.co.uk/windows2000/
.. Patrick LoPresti is diong some great stuff over at
unattended.sourceforge.net.

Hope this helps

Quite a lot! Some of it depends on what you are trying to achieve, the
deployment method (CD-ROM, Network), and whether you want a "pure"
Microsoft solution, open source tools, non-open source free tools, paid
for tools etc. It would be much easier if you just said what you want to do?
Destination drive partitioning,

If you use CD-ROM, you can set an option to be able to manually set up
partitions, even on huge RAID sets with NTFS.
Installing to a 2nd physical drive,

I did this on my home system not long back. I created a disttribution
point on SCSI disk No 1 (my old disk), then connected a new SCSI disk
and used the syspart option to put brand new Win2000 on the new drive
including the boot sector. I then switch over the SCSI ID to point to
the new drive - I can now unplug the old drive if I want to.
Changing default 'special' folders location ?

Yes, but unless you've got a REALLY good reason to do this, I can't see
the point? One reason I can think of, is if you're running a web server
- you don't want WWWROOT on your boot drive.
