Unable to view properties when I right click mouse

I am unable to view properties when I right click my mouse.
My PC did not crash, I noticed this problem just recently.
When I right click, my PC just hangs at one point I waited 20
minutes...nothing.
I think it may be a program running in the background or memory
issue....?

I recently ran across response from Ramesh to "jimmyd" back Dec 2005
where jimmyd was experiencing the same problem but I believe his PC had
crashed...
I ran and tried all of Ramesh suggestions mentioned in his response to
"jimmyd" but I still have the problem....?

It almost seems that there is a program running that's using up the
memory or it confused the CPU so that it can't make up its mind what to
do...

I have installed - Spyware, Ad-Aware, Spybot, Zone alarm (Free ver)
System Suite 6 (Trend Micro anti-virus)
I have checked and made sure there are no virus or spyware on my PC but
still have this problem.....

Opened Task Manger I do not see evidence that any program applications
are running..!
Could be something that's running in the background that Task manager
is unable to detect...

The only way I can get out of the problem is to do a hard reboot or
reboot thru Task manager.

My OS is Windows XP Pro & Office 2003 SP2 and all the latest Windows
& Office updates, on-board memory is 1 Gig.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Wes,
I will download the utilities and try your suggestions.
One other problem I noticed is I have a LaserJet 4 printer.
Whenever I am printing a doc my pc locks up until the printing has
completed is there a connection to the other problem I am having?

Can I (should I ) disable all Networks services?
Other than my dial up connection to my ISP, I'm not aware of being on a
network.
Thank you.

Using the process of elimination, It took about one half hour to find
the problem file using the ShellExView utility. I disable all
non-Microsoft files extenstions and as it turned out the last file
extention that I disabled "nView Desktop Context Menu" was
the cause!!!! Not sure why this extention has been installed on my pc
since Oct 2004....?
Thank you for you help, much appreciated.

The only other issue I have is the printer tying up the PC resources
whiles its printing...

nView Desktop Context Menu is from Nvidia. I.e. nVidia based graphics
cards.

nVidia installs all kinds of useless crap.

I have disabled these Nvidia right click Menu entries.
These five entries...
Extension Name: Desktop Explorer
Extension Name: Desktop Explorer Menu
Extension Name: DesktopContext Class
Extension Name: NVIDIA CPL Extension
Extension Name: nView Desktop Context Menu

I will never buy anything made by NVIDIA ever again.

I also have all of these disabled on my machine:

NvCplDaemon
[System Tray icon used to change display settings, change the clock rate and
memory speed for nVidia based graphics cards. This is unnecessary since you
can easily configure these settings the way you want them in the Display
Properties and not have to mess with them again. Also disable the "NVIDIA
Driver Helper Service" if enabled as it can cause this entry to be
re-enabled on re-boot (note that this service can also cause extreme
shutdown delays if enabled ]
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?letter=R&filter=&count=50&offset=150

NvMediaCenter
[[RunDLL32.exe NvMCTray.dll, NvTaskbarInit System Tray icon used to manage
settings for nVidia based graphics cards. May be required for some 3D
applications to recognize your card correctly - such as the game
"Everquest". Otherwise, settings can be changed manually via Display
Properties]]

nwiz.exe = NVIDIA nView Wizard
[[Application enables user to having 32 virtual desktops, get a desktop
larger than the viewable area of the monitor, being able to divide the
display across more than one monitor, managing applications and many more
functionality.]]

If interested, manually delete these three entries:
NvCplDaemon, NvMediaCenter and nwiz.

Start | Run | Type: regedit | Click OK |
Navigate to >>>
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Look in the right hand pane for the name NvCplDaemon.
Right click on NvCplDaemon and select Delete.
When this message pops up: Are you sure you want to delete this value?
Click YES.

Repeat for NvMediaCenter and nwiz.

The three registry entries are...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Value Name: NvCplDaemon
Value Type: REG_SZ
Value Data: RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Value Name: NvMediaCenter
Value Type: REG_SZ
Value Data:RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\NvMcTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit

Wes,

Yeah! This issue is still "in the stands", though it's been a long time
since MS issued a revised verclsid fix (Q918165) :) If that's not the case,
might it be the usual context menu handler problem we've been seeing for
years? Anyway, it's good to have the crappy shellex removed from the Desktop
context menu.

How about the performance, Wes? I've to buy a WDDM compliant card (to
support Vista's Aero features), and may go for NVIDIA.

I don't know. I am building a new machine and am undecided about a video
card. At least with NVIDIA I know what to disable. ;-)
