Unable to use update or to download anything

I recently had to re-install windows XP home edition
(2002). I can get on the internet (AOL is my ISP).
However, I can not download anything to update my anti-
virus, windows update, etc. When I click on Windows
update it won't open the page. I have to go to
microsoft.com to open page. When I click on updates the
page comes up to click to scan. When that is done I get
a message that the page was unable to load with an error
message of "ox800C0005". I found a knowledge base
article 843499 with that error code and followed the
directions. No luck. Any ideas?

Do not use your AOL browser when visiting Windows Update.
Only use Internet Explorer.
