unable to use system restore?

Hi,
I have an ongoing problem with System Restore. My system has an SK8N mobo
with an AMD Athlon FX 53 CPU, 320 GB hard drive. I am running XPpro with
Office 2003, Norton I-net 2005 along with assorted software.

I am unable to use System Restore. Have been unable to ever use it as it
reports from ANY System Restore point. The System Restore is enabled with the
max amount of disk space usage.

I followed on-line advice of:

accessing the"System Volume Information"folder (i did the "unticked all the
-hidden folder option in order to see it..)
I used: "cacls "d:\system volume information" /t /p administrators:f"
command but couldn,t access the folder either. I got "he device is not ready"

Any idea where my restore points are and why I get "unable to restore" on
all the points?
Help greatly appreciated. (Btw, I'm a com layman..)

Thanks Bert,
I found your link extremely useful and indeed I carried out a test (as
described on the site) which proved (...macic???..) successful.
I was able to create a system restore point and the entry in window event
viewer conformed the successful outcome.
All is well for now and joy has returned. Thanks again.
