Unable to upgrade from XP

1. When I run the install DVD from my XP system I get the message: Your
computer does not have enough space for temporary files Windows installation
needs at least 436 megabytes (MB) of free space on any partition for
temporary files. Free some space on any partition. [Error: 0x80070103]

I have 40 GB available.

2. When I run the installer by booting to the DVD, the initial load runs
and aborts with an error: OxC0000098 Kernel is missing or corrupt. The
program that shows as being corrupted is ntkrnlpa.exe

I eventually got it to work; my current windows xp installation was not my
active boot partition on my drive. I made it the active parition and the
troubles have stopped. It would seem thought that Vista would be able to
diagnose and inform me that this is a requirement.

Also, your 40GB free is an NTFS partition, right? Vista won't do FAT32
