Unable to update XP Pro

I have Windows XP Professional installed on my laptop computer. Every
single time I start my computer I am reminded about the fact that the
automatic updates are disabled. This alert is coming from Norton
Anti-Virus 2006 security center. I am unable to update windows from the
windows update option on the start menu and by going to windows update
website. I receive an error message about one or more services not
running. I have gone through the troubleshooting process which
indicated that I should run the services.msc file and check the status
of Backgroud Intelligent Transfer Service. I have followed the step by
step instructions listed for turning this service on and enabling it.
Even after it is turned on and running, I still cannot get updates. How
do I fix this problem?

Open internet options,settings,view objects,R.click all one at a time,select,
"update" close out,go to advanced in IO,set to default, close out. Also, thier
is a hotfix for update if SP2 is installed, its #922582 You can also, open
help
from start menu,in search type:Windows Update Catalog In kb results, click
on "how to install from catalog" Click on the URL for v4 update, you might
also,
go to microsoft.com,click on "Microsoft Update" it replaces window update....
