For an unknown reason MICROSOFT ANTISPYWARE BETA 1 is
unable to connect online to receive updates. I do have
Norton Internet Securities 2005. What must I do to fix
this? Please help.

Did you disable the auto protect feature for Norton then try updating
Microsoft AntiSpyware? Also, have you been able to browse the Internet? If
not, then its possible your web browser Internet Explorer is working off
line. Open it, click File and ensure "Work offline" is not checked. Also try
this:
Open up control panel and double-click on add/remove programs.
Select Microsoft AntiSpyware
Select "Change"
On the Microsoft AntiSpyware Maintenance Wizard, click next.
On the next screen (Microsoft AntiSpyware Maintenance Wizard) select Update
Microsoft AntiSpyware and click next.
Select Install
Let the product update.
Click Finish.

Also from Ed Barba:
Rich, Are you also using CounterSpy software from Sunbelt? If you are there
seems to be a conflict between them. When I had both on my machine I had the
same problem. I had to uninstall CounterSpy so MSAS could receive the
updates.

Joseph:

I had the same issue as you (I too use NIS 2005). Yes, as
Andre correctly observed, you could turn off NIS
protection, but that defeats the purpose of the firewall,
eh? Also, if you are setup like me to request updates at
4:00AM (or similar), you don't want to leave NIS off
indefinitely.

I simply ensured the following three programs had "permit
all" status within NIS, and auto updates work just fine:

GiantAntiSpywareMain.exe
gcasswupdater.exe
GiantAntiSpywareUPdater.exe

All 3 modules are in C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware

To get there:

Launch NIS Status screen
Click Personal Firewall
Click CONFIGURE
Click PROGRAMS tab
add the 3 programs I mentioned above
OK/Next until changes saved

Good luck.

- Clark.
