Unable to setup SMTP server

Hi,

My email server installation program refuses to install because I have no
internet
domain or hostname registered. If I go through the usual TCP/IP setup
features
on my NT4 machine I can set those - but not under XP server. I can only
configure
my local NT network domain and hostname.

What am I missing ?

I should note that you do need a domain with working DNS before any SMTP
email server can function correctly. This doesn't mean Windows settings,
but registering a domain with registrar (such as
http://www.registerfly.com/).

If I go through the usual TCP/IP setup features on my NT4 machine I can

The hostname is the computer name and you can change this in System
properties, "Computer Name", "Change" button.

There you can also change the primary DNS suffix (domain for DNS
purposes) -- click the "More" button. If you are part of an Active
Directory domain, this will be set to the AD domain by default and changing
it may have undesireable consequences.

You can add additional DNS suffixes in TCP/IP properties cor a specific
network connection, but whether any of that will satisfy your email server,
I couldn't tell you...

I suppose I wasn't clear in my last post. I have a functional SMTP server
running
on my NT Pro machine, where I can set my hostname and internet domain
(which is registered through Ultranet) in the network/TCP-IP/DNS section.
There is no such option, as far as I can tell, in XP Pro to do the same.

I have also tried to edit the "domain" entry in the registry; this technique
works
on my NT machine. The value is set upon exit from regedit, but is cleared
again
on reboot. Why is that ?
