Unable to Set up Home LAN with XP

My apology for repeating the simple problem many others have taken an answer
for, as my problem refuses to go away!

I need to set up a home LAN with between a Desktop (on XP-Pro) and a Laptop
(on XP-Home) using a Lan cable, with internet access available on the Desktop
with a DSL Broadband. I have followed the sequence of the Network wizard.
The IP addresses used on the two are 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 respectively.

Each machine shows the presence of a LAN, but doesn't gp beyond that- ie I
am unable to view the other computer, or its files, or access the internet by
the Laptop.

What should I do differently?

You would need a special type of network cable (a cross over cable) to
connect 2 computers together directly. You would use a "normal" network
cable to connect a computer to a hub.

Hope this helps.

I will find out if my cable is Crossover or Normal, and try the process
again. Otherwise I presume the XP Network Wizard steps should do the job?
Thanks for your help.

If the problem isn't simple connectivity, and if the Network Wizard doesn't fix
things, then you may need to do some analysis. One of the most common causes of
this problem would be a misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall, or other
security component. There are several other possibilities too, and any might be
the cause of your problem. Read this article with an open mind.

Or take a look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and
"net config workstation", from each computer, and diagnose the problem. Read
this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download
browstat!):
