unable to send/recieve file transfers

I need to find out what ports to enable or open in order to send/recieve
file transfers.
Also, where do I enter these port numbers, etc.?
I sort of remember doing this in the settings part on the advanced tab under
network connections.
Sorry to say, I forgot the exact procedure.
