unable to send email

ok, I'll preface this w/ the statement that I'm almost 100% sure this isn't
an Outlook issue, but an ISP issue. However, they refuse to provide any
further support so...

I'm setting up a new pc for my father. Instead of using the juno software
I've got it set up so he can use the dialup connection to access the
internet, and am trying to set up outlook. We have XP w/ Office 2003. I have
comfirmed the pop and smtp settings, and when I click on the "test account
settings" button, all the tests complete except the "send test email". I've
verified connectivity etc...and I can receive emails, but any email I send
out gets the "sys admin - 'undeliverable'" reply w/ the message: "552
Attention! You are currently not logged onto Juno. Please log into our
network to send e-mail"

I can go to their web site and log on no problem. If I click on the "more
settings" button, I get a 4 tabbed window. Under "outgoing server", I have a
"My outoging server (SMTP) requires authentification" box, and then
underneath I have 3 bullet options:

1. use same settings as my incoming server
2. log on using.... (boxes for entering info)
3. log on using incoming mail server before sending email

I've tried every conceivable combo w/ no luck. I also have the Windows
firewall turned off, and under the firewall advanced tab I have both juno and
local area connection unchecked.

Again, I realize that this is probably an ISP issue, but on the off chance
that there is a setting in Outlook somewhere I've missed, I thought I'd try
here.

I have the same problem. Please let me know if you figure this out! The
installation always sets up Outlook to connect to server thru LAN even though
I use a dial up connection. No matter what I set it too, the trial send
message always has an error stating that the server did not respond. The
receive tests all show OK.

When you create an Outlook account, you must specify a POP server and an
SMTP server. Those servers are in some ISP's domain. Also, you're calling
some ISP with the dial-up connection. Typically, the dial-up provider and
the mail provider are the same ISP. Each has a username/password for
authentication. For the dial-up connection you must specify the credentials
for that carrier in the dialing properties and for the mail provider you
must provide those credentials within the mail account. If you're trying to
send via Juno's mail server, then you must specify Juno's credentials for
that server regardless of which credentials you supplied in the dialing
properties.

Can you be more specific as to what ISP you're using as a carrier and what
ISP you're using as a mail provider and what credentials and servers you're
specifying where?

I can try - As my "vacation" is over, I'm no longer at my Dad's place....

My Dad is using Juno as an ISP provider (dialup). On his old pc, he had
software installed that he clicked on which connected him to the internet.
The Juno page would open up and he'd click on the "email" link and access
email that way.

In order to not install the Juno software, I created the dialup connector w/
the Juno number in Network connections. That works.

I contacted Juno and got the POP and SMPT info. the POP is: pop.juno.com &
the SMTP is: smtp.juno.com.

In the properties box that opens up (Outlook: tools>email accounts>
change..), there's an entry for his name and email address. Below that,
there's entries for his ID and pwd. His ID is: (e-mail address removed) (although
I've tried it w/out the "@juno.com" part - when he logs onto the Juno site
for email, his ID is: (e-mail address removed).

In the upper right-hand corner of that properties box is where you enter in
the POP/SMTP info. Below that is the button to click to test the account. As
I indicate below, 4 of the 5 tests pass, but the send email test fails.

Next to that is a button for more settings. Here my memory gets a bit hazy -
but as I posted in my first email, it's something like this:

I get a 4 tabbed window. Under "outgoing server", I have a
"My outoging server (SMTP) requires authentification" box, and then
underneath I have 3 bullet options:

1. use same settings as my incoming server
2. log on using.... (boxes for entering info)
3. log on using incoming mail server before sending email

Again, I've tried every combo (pretty sure anyway) of the above, but nothing
works.

I researched this a bit more and it's possible that the provider has their
Port 25 closed which is not allowing Outlook to connect. Juno basically said
that as they've given me the settings, that's all they are going to do as
they don't support Microsoft.

If you need any more info, please let me know.

Whoa! It's too late now, but NEVER post a real address in a public
newsgroup. You've just guaranteed the delivery of LOTS of SPAM and viruses
to that address.

This username/password should be put in the "Logon Information" on the mail
account properties page.

So, what ports did Juno say you should use? Whatever they are, they should
be specified on the Advanced tab of the account properties dialogue. Did

you have the settings chosen to match what they said?

Try enabling diagnostic logging
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300479/en-us) and if you can't understand
what you see after performing a test or a send/receive, post the log
contents here.

** yep. tried that and then a couple different combos of ID (w/ the
'@juno.com' after the user name & w/out - just the user name) in the "logon
information" field. Neither worked.
So, what ports did Juno say you should use? Whatever they are, they should

**They didn't say, and were basically completely in the dark w/ anything
past the main settings properties page. Literally, all they would say/repeat
is that I had the correct POP/SMTP settings and if it didn't work, tough.
Neither of the 2 people I spoke to had any knowledge of the advanced settings
area. The port 'info' was something I got posting to an ISP forum.

I'll see if I can get someone to do the testing you recommend below and
we'll go from there.

I am having the exact same problem, so maybe I can provide you the
information you need since the computer jimk was working with is not easily
accessible to him.

I just tried to implement the transport logging, but haven't found any logs.
I restarted Outlook and tried to send e-mail a few times and have gotten
e-mails, but still no log.

I have tried everything I can think of. I had this problem when I was using
the 5.0 Juno software with it's own program to receive, view, etc. my e-mail
but tried to use Outlook without success.

I recently started having problems with Juno so uninstalled everything and
installed Juno 7.0 thinking this would fix the Outlook issue, but it didn't
;-(

I am using Outlook 2003 with Windows XP. Juno's help has been dismal. I
hate to change providers, but they don't seem to care about their customers.
