Some other users of New Hotmail, using both desktops and laptops, IE and OE,
have been having these problems since the new format was introduced on 01
Dec-03. Some users are seeing Hotmail messages arrive with blank message
bodies.

Hotmail is a secure site, requiring that your computer be able to negotiate
SSL protocols when logging in, so any of these third-party applications may
be interfering (as well as hijackware): anti-virus, firewall, anti-spam
tools, "system" tools (NSW, NIS, anything by McAfee). The best approach
would be to disable all of them and, assuming Hotmail then works properly,
re-enable each application in turn, by itself with no others running, to see
which one or which combination is causing the problem. If the machines are
on a network, that's another area to consider when troubleshooting.

Make absolutely certain each machine is fully up-to-date at Windows Update
(and with virus definitions) and that the 5.6 Scripting Engine has been
reinstalled:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/webdev.asp.

If WinXP, look into the Java vs. Java VM situation ("Breaking up is so very
hard to do."): http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers_9.htm

Also check your system for "hijackware":

http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm

You must seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each and every
use, even "right out of the box". But even then, they can't catch
everything. HijackThis (http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip; [new
URL] ) is the preferred tool to use these days. It will help to both
identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post your files to
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ for expert analysis, not here.**

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.

I'm monitoring WinXP General, IE6 Browser, OE6 and MSN Discussion newsgroups
for posts about these and similar problems with New Hotmail. The number of
reported problems have decreased dramatically since mid-December.

PA Bear -- I'm having this same problem on my computer. However, my daughter's computer doesn't have the problem. The 2 computers are set up on a wireless home network. I also don't have the problem with my Hotmail account on my computer at work. I've tried the suggestion of refreshing the Compose page but that didn't work. I've followed the information you posted and still cannot send mail or use any of the functions on the "Tools" drop-down. I've reinstalled 5.6 Scripting Engine, reinstalled IE, run SpyBot and McAfee VirusScan. The virus scan did detect and clean/delete 13 occurrences of viruses/trojans. Can this be part of the problem? What do I do next?

Sorry...This is the problem I was referring to in my posting yesterday
Thanks

You are not alone:

http://forums.theideaweb.com/printthread.php?threadid=5271

It appears to be a Javascript error. Try disabling VirusScan. If no joy,
see the above discussion.

McAfee products have always wreaked havoc in OE. I strongly urge you to
uninstall it and get another, less-troublesome anti-virus application (e.g.,
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php).

Please post future OE6 problems to

Same issues going on here as well. Has started ever
since hotmail was changed to the new format. the rich
text editor will not load and causes the compose message
to fail. I've had to send out emails from outlook
instead for the time being. I run xp pro with ie6 and
all is updated as far as i know.
