Unable to select "Automatic Updates"

Boxy

G'day all,
Can somebody pleeeeeease help. All I am trying
to do is activate "Automatic Updates" feature. I go to
Control Panel\System then click on the Automatic Update
tab, however it does not let me check the "Keep my
Computer up to date" box. I have checked the
Administrative services\Component services menu and the
Automatic Updates field is enabled. I even tried
disabling it then re-enabling with no success.

I went to the Microsoft Updates web site and there is a
feature along the lines of "3 steps to internet
security". I ran this in automatic mode but when it came
to the part of Automatic Updates it says that mt network
administrator is looking after automatic updates and that
there was nothing further I needed to do. But I am not
part of a network, I have a single home computer
connected to standard dial up internet and I am the only
user set up on this computer so would assume that I am
the administrator. Is there some setting that I need to
change?????

Cheers in advance.......

Hi Boxy,

Is this WinXP Pro? If so, start/run gpedit.msc and check User config/admin
templates/Windows components/Windows update - there is a setting here that
if enabled will block access to the update site. You will also find another
one under User config/admin templates/system.

How ya going Nutcase,
Sorry mate I forgot to mention that
I am using XP home edition so I could not use your tip.
However I have tried running services.msc to make sure
that the Auto Update feature is started (which it was).
Thanks for you input anyway. I know that It is not
critical that I use Automatic Updates but it's more of a
curiosity thing now as I am one of those people that just
need to know WHY????

Hi,

Disable AutoUpdates from the services, and set the startup type to disabled.
Reboot. Locate the WUTemp folder (hidden system folder, so you may have to
change folder options/view tab to see it), clear the contents of this
folder. Next, we will reinstall the Windows Update site controls.

To reinstall the Windows Update site controls, you must first remove the old
controls. The following are generic steps for all versions of Windows, so
not all may apply to your system:

Remove Controls:
1. Click on Start, then Run.
2. Type in 'regsvr32 iuctl.dll /u' (without the quotes) click OK. You should
get a successful message, click OK on that as well.
3. Click on Start/find/files, choose to look in C:\
4. Type in the file name IUCTL.DLL and click Search Now. Delete every copy
of this file that you find.
5. Run the search again for the file IUENGINE.DLL. Again, delete every copy
of this file you find.

Delete Windows Update files:
1. Double-click on My Computer.
2. Open the C drive
3. Open the Program Files folder
4. Open the Windows Update folder.
5. Delete everything in the folder except the V4 folder.
6. Next, Open the V4 folder, if it exists.
7. Delete everything in the folder except the iuhist.xml file
8. Close Window

Then revisit the WindowsUpdate site and you will be prompted to reinstall
the V4 site controls. Once this has completed, rerun services.msc and
restart the AutoUpdate service, set the startup type to automatic, then
reboot. See if this helps.
