good morning, here is the problem. I'am able to succefully ping both
computers on my network, but i'am unable to view them under network places.
typing \\computer name in the run box gives me an error network path not
found. like i said im able to ping both computers. i have a dsl modem running
to a linksys 8 port router. both computers are windows xp pro with sp2. i
have tried as much as i can, im tired of yanking the rest of my hair out. by
the way, both computers are able to access the internet. im only running
windows built in firewall which is diabled, and running norton anti-virus
2006. p.s. sometimes when i do ping one of my computers norton comes up with
a box telling me that it just blocked an apparent "worm" attack, it gives me
the ip address which is the computer i was pinging from. could norton somehow
be blocking me? thank you

Yes--norton is blocking the pings.

In general--look for a firewall. In the Windows firewall, ping responses are
controlled by settings reached via the Advanced tab. I'm not sure what
you'll need to do with Norton to enable ping responses--but that isn't your
real issue--I assume file and printer sharing is?

Let me point out that these groups are for the support of Windows Defender,
Microsoft's anti-spyware component for Windows XP and Vista, rather than for
general networking questions. However, maybe we can help..

I think you'll need to consult Norton documentation about how to enable
either ping responses, or file and printer sharing, or both.
