Unable to see other computers OR connect in hotel

I tried connecting to another laptop running XP using a crossover cable, and we couldn't see each other. We both ran the networking wizard, rebooted, reconnected cables, etc., but no luck. The other user could see himself, but not me. I could not even see myself in Network Places. No firewall was being used

I also tried connecting to a hotel network for some high speed internet, but no luck. This made me think that my network card was fried, but when I connect at home with my DSL modem, it works without problems

Any ideas

I said "my DSL modem." It's an Efficient Networks modem,
if that's what you mean.
