That means you must like my messages. Of course you do because I am fixing
your lies about Ubuntu that you post on a daily basis.

Hello Everybody,

Here's a tidbit that may or may not shed any light on my problem:

The same exact problem occurred a few months ago. (At least the outward
appearance was exactly the same; the underlying cause may have been
different.) After many hours of teeth-gnashing and hair-pulling and
trial-and-error, I stumbled on a fix. By changing the folder containing
the HTML file from "All files" to "Documents" (in
properties...customize), the problem went away. I thought at the time
that was exceedingly strange, but it worked, so I just left it alone and
went on my merry way. Now the problem is back, and of course the same
strange fix doesn't apply.

I still have a sneaky suspicion that there might be a correlation with
the QuickTime update (see prior message). That was the only significant
change to my computer after the time that there wasn't a problem.
However, that level of knowledge is way out of my league.

Just a thought,
CRB

If you can't save the file when it's open in IE, I suggest you try the
same situation with another browser. May give you a clue as to whether
it's a systemic problem or an IE problem.

Sorry, I don't know what you're getting at. I've been creating html files in
folders on my Desktop for many years with no problems. Where else would I put
them?

Anywhere. In Documents, in existing folders, in folders that you
create, in subfolders of the preceding three, on external drives...

I am hoping that you were joking and that you caught me :-)

Notepad ++ error message:
"Save failed
Please check whether this file is opened in another program."
Notepad error message:
"Cannot create the
C:\Users\Roy\Desktop\WebPages\test.html file
Make sure that the path and file name are correct."

As I suspected... Notepad was giving you a false generic error.
Notepad++ is providing the real error message.
When I open the file with Firefox it works!! Yay! Are we on to something?
It would be great if this sheds light on the problem. I wouldn't consider it
a fix, though.
The Microsoft method is still broken, and I really need it to be working.

Yes.... the problem is with MS IE locking the file. I'm not sure you
can correct that. It could be some update you loaded, or some tweak in
MSIE.

One thing I might try first would be to reset MS IE. Perhaps there's
some setting that has caused this behavior.

Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced -> Reset

See if that helps. If not, the only choice would be a system restore,
or perhaps trying later upgrades of MS IE (perhaps to V8?).

Bob,

Many thanks for your help!
All of the choices you mention look a bit onerous to me.:(

The warning note at the reset button basically says "Do this only if you're
contemplating suicide." It talks about disabling add-ons, but doesn't say
whether it would be permanent, or how to re-enable them, or even what they
are. Not very helpful.

As I mentioned earlier in this thread, I had a bad experience the last time
I did a restore because it bombed my security software.

As for upgrading to IE8, I've been told there are bugs with it and that I
should hold off until they're fixed. If I did upgrade to IE8 and didn't like
it, I suppose there's no way to go back to IE7 (at least though a trusted
source)?

Well, I gotta do something. Here goes! Will post back with results.

Thanks again!

The IE Reset is fairly tame, despite the warnings. Fear it not!

The IE8 upgrade is more of an issue. There are bugs, and there are
some changes to the interface - not necessarily better, depending on
what you prefer.

This is just to mention, I developed the same problem (so it is reproducible). Several things started to behave a bit weirdly after
the monthly MS update releases for me. But, as you said, there was also an update to QuickTime (which I gather may have been to
better support iTunes 9 & maybe some security issues besides). The QuickTime update was 9 Sep, 09, & iTunes was again updated 22
Sep, 09, which is after your message.

Having said that, I'm guessing MS is securing up Vista to a non enjoyable state so that people will buy Windows 7, & Apple is taking
advantage of that by showing super friendliness in their software & service to entice people to buy Apple products. Next, bored
Apple users will buy Windows, then, when the user groups become unhappy, they'll turn & repeat, every action representing cash flow.

So once again, I feel like a crash test dummy or a rat in a maze.
