Hi all,

I have 2 computers with windows xp sp2 conectated to a switch and this
one to a router to the internet and now when I click on the "view
workgroups computers" most of the times on the first double click I get
about a 15 seconds pause and then I get a popup window that says:

Mygroup is not accessible. you might not have permission to use the
nerwork resource. contact the administrator of the server to find out
if you have acess permissions.
The specified network name is no longer available. OK

Then I click OK, then I doubleclick ont "View network groups" and then
I see my two computers and can browse them without problems.

I did a browstat status whe I get the error and i get this:

C:\temp>browstat status

Status for domain GAR on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{67327333-97B0-4523

Browsing is active on domain.
Master browser name is: AL
Master browser is running build 2600
1 backup servers retrieved from master AL
\\AL
Unable to retrieve server list from AL: 64

I run it again when the "View network groups" works ok and I get this:

An 8021 suggests that an Error 64 is:
The specified network name is no longer available.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/135404/

This suggests a name resolution problem. If it is intermittent, and you don't
see any browser conflicts hinted in the "browstat status" logs, I'd be looking
at an intermittent hardware problem.

Why do you have a switch and a router? How does everything connect? (don't make
us guess the details).

Hi,
I have a switch connected with 2 pcs and a router (adsl to the
internet). the reason for this is that the router only has a 4-port hub
and I wanted more speed to transfer files between the computers so i
use the switch. A diagram would be

Internet <---- > adsl router<-------->switch<-------------------> pc1
|

-------------> pc2
I didn't mention this because both computer don't have internet
problems, it's only lan problems

Just an update,
after 2 hours on, I've done a browstat status 3 times, one after the
other and and got the error 64 on the twow first ones and no errors on
the 3rd one. Waited 5 mins did another one and I get back the error 64

This is crazy!!!!!!!

OK, I agree that it may be crazy, and it may be frustrating. But you need to
calm down, so we can diagnose what the problem is. We're not in front of your
computers, you are. So you have to do the work. I highly recommend that you
listen, and read.

I'll first ask you to read my article on diagnosing problems.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/08/solving-network-problems-tutorial.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/08/solving-network-problems-tutorial.html

Then about hardware issues.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/dealing-with-physical-network-problems.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/dealing-with-physical-network-problems.html

Now, with an intermittent problem like yours, if it doesn't result from a
browser conflict (which in itself may result from computers being turned on and
off), it probably results from intermittent hardware failures. So I ask again -
why do you need a switch, if you have a router? How old is the switch? How
about make and model for the router, and for the switch? Have you tried
different cables, and different switch and router ports?

We also might try using PingPlotter to look for network problems.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/essential-tools-for-desktop-and.html#PingPlotter>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/essential-tools-for-desktop-and.html#PingPlotter

Install PP on both computers, and have it simultaneously ping the router. When
you see an error 64 show up, look at the PP display on both computers. See if
both, or only one, computer shows a network problem.

Ever watch CSI on TV? That show is about forensic analysis (but takes a few
liberties in presenting details). This is forensic analysis too. Let's try and
gather some clues, so we can make some educated guesses about what to look at
next.

Hi, thanks fpr the suggestions,
The adsl router to the internet is an ·com OfficeConnect 812 4-port
hub.As I want more speed between the computers I have connected a
SpeedStream ss2105 swich. With the croute hub you get 10Mb network and
with the switch 100Mb.
On the computer with the error 64 i have changed the network card.

What looks like is that it takes several tries of browstat status to
work. First it gives error 64. If i try 2nd time i get the servers
output and an error 64 because it can't list the domains. And for a 3rd
time i don't get errors. This is not intermitent, it`s how it works on
this computer.

No problems with PingPlot.

By "No problems with PingPlot.", do you mean no problems running PP? Or that PP
does not show any network problems when your Error 64 shows up?

Let's have a go from another direction. Diagnose this from the ground up. And
be deliberate, and keep an open mind. You can skip steps if you wish, but you
may have to go back later.
