WinXP Pro SP2 plus other updates. Can't "repair network connection".
Connection is good, DHCP et al, is working.

Other workstation required a complete re-install and it worked. I have
another pc that I don't want to have to do that to.

Replaced NICs, etc. I've disabled and deleted the network connection,
to no avail.

No, I can't pin down what the last thing that occurred since it worked last.

Ideas?

Thanks!

Sometimes when a "repair network connection" is tried, a simple:
"ipconfig /release"
"ipconfig /renew"
sequence is also useful. Some have even scripted the sequence to save having to
re key it repeatedly.

Also, consider a Winsock or TCP/IP repair.

For XP SP2, Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh winsock reset catalog" into the
command window.

Give LSP-Fix <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>, WinsockFix
<http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257>, or WinsockXPFix
<http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html> a shot.

If no help yet, reset TCP/IP.

Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh int ip reset c:\netsh.txt" into the command
window.

If no help so far, please start by providing ipconfig information for the
problem computer, and for one working computer in your network.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
Identify operating system (by name, version, and SP level) with each ipconfig
listing.

Chuck,

Since I posted, I've found a few more things out. For one, the good
suggestions you give I have already tried, and here are the results:

1. http://support.microsoft.com/?id=318584 - does not work. There is no
way to "uninstall" TCP/IP. When it is highlighted, "uninstall" is
greyed out. I can configure, but not delete.

2. When I ran NETDIAG /TEST:WINSOCK, the following line is the only line
that did not pass:

"Winsock test . . . . . . . . . . . : Failed
Failed to get UDP packet size information. The error occurred was:
The support for the specified socket type does not exist in this address
family.

The number of protocols which have been reported : 0"

3. When I type "netsh winsock reset catalog", I get:
"Unable to reset the Winsock Catalog.
The system cannot find the file specified"

4. When I type "netsh winsock show catalog", I get nothing back.

What do you think?

Thanks!

Chuck,

Also tried winsockfix from http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4372.html
and it did not work.

When I attempt "ipconfig /release (or renew) all" I get:
"The operation failed as no adapter is in a state permissible for this
operation" (paraphrasing).

Does not matter which NIC (integrated or one I just got today).

Thanks!

Chuck,

One more thing. Is it possible to copy a Winsock Catalog from one PC to
another? If so, how?

Thanks!

AFAIK, the Winsock "Catalog" is in the registry. I don't think copying the
Catalog is possible.

Try resetting IP - "netsh int ip reset c:\netsh.txt". Then reboot and try the
Winsock resets afterwards.

BTW, whether or not your email address that you're posting with is real or not,
it's not a good idea. Protect yourself and the rest of the internet - read this
article.

Chuck,

I'm just glad that I was alone when I discovered this. It would be
quite embarassing if it were a roomful! ;)

Thanks for your help - it really did make a difference. Strange that
the 'netsh' commands wouldn't work.

The last things I tried was the winsockfix file, rebooted, and then the
'netsh' worked. I was then able to 'ipconfig /release', but not
'renew'. Then I figured, 'what the heck!' and replaced the cable. What
do you know? Worked immediately.

Thanks again!

I'm having the exact same problem and have tried everything you have... I'm
still unable to get connected...
netdiag /test:winsock /v still reports "failed to get UDP packet size"...

Stan,

I got that, too. Winsockfix didn't help?
