I've recently tried to re-load some applications, mostly
games, on my laptop which has Windows XP home edition.
These are applications that have worked fine on this
platform in the past.

When I boot up the load screen I get this message:

16-Bit Windown Subsystem
C:Windows\System32\AUTOEXEC.NT
The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and
Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'close' to
terminate the application.

the support folks at the application sites said that this
is a corrupt file within Windows that needs to be fixed.

Can anyone give me a hand here? Thank you.

Two possible causes:
Could be caused a trojan or something similar, e.g. see
http://groups.google.com/[email protected]

Also, AVAST (antivirus software) can be the cause if you
have WinXP SP2 installed:
http://groups.google.com/[email protected]
and run an up to date check with a good AV program anyway

You can correct the matter by copying windows\repair\autoexec.nt back
into windows\system32, but if you have one of these problems it will
only arise again
