unable to play DVD's that I burn on external DVD burner

I can not play any DVD that I have burned using my HP external DVD burner.
The DVD's will only play in the HP burner. I have a Dell Inpsirion 5100
laptop. When the DVD is inserted into my Dell, it doesn't even recognize
there is a disk in the drive. Help??
