Unable to Ping by name

This is a follow on as I have not yet resolved this issue:

I have a small network at home seems to be working fine except the main
computer which has stopped seeing or communicating with any other on the
network.
*It does connect to the internet OK through the network switch and DSL
connection.
*It had worked fine for ages.

All normal checks done including checking all names and removing firewalls.

*I can ping IP adresses OK but cannot name ping.
*Also: I cannot see my own name in the "My network" list.

Previous assistance would indicate the NETBIOS is not working. I have triple
checked the set up is OK: [1] Configured NetBIOS over TCP/IP on the right
network connection. [2]. Set it to "Enabled", not to "Default". [3] Clicked
the OK button afterward.

Still not working. Internet still working fine

Ron Lowe Suggested:
On the 'main computer', go to a command prompt and do an ipconfig /all

What is the Node Type? -- Unknown, See Txt below

Pinging by address and not by name usually suggests lack of DNS
availability. NETBIOS not required by XP - required to communicate with
computers using older versions of Windows e.g. 98 and ME

Captron: This certainly conflicting but interesting information: As the
Internet DNS works, and now all the IP addresses are manually configured, and
this computer is the one that is used 95% of the time, how can I investigate
the DNS further?

Thanx

Do you enable any Firewall in your windows? I have one case (is firewall
problem), same like yours.

Captron,

DNS is the preferred name resolution technique for Windows XP, in larger LANs,
when a DNS server is setup for that purpose. It replaces WINS.

Unless you have a DNS server on your LAN, you'll likely still use NetBIOS.

What error do you get when you "cannot name ping"? Do all of the computers show
"Unknown" for Node Type?

Chuck: The error I get when pinging by name is:
Ping request could not find host <Computer name>. Please check the name and
try again.

When I try to ping the same computer with its own name it pings just fine
When I try to ping the subject computer with its own name, it now pings just
fine

In all cases of testing I had shut down my firewall and double checked the
Windows one was still off. This is one of the things I had considered.

Chuck: Forgot to mention yes all ipconfigs are the same except for the local
IP address.
