How to turn on Netbios

This is a follow on from 4 other posts where I'm slowly getting to grips with
a problem that allws me to ping any IP address on the little net I havem but
not ping names.

I have a small network at home seems to be working fine except the main
computer has stopped seeing or communicating with any other on the
network.
*It does connect to the internet OK through the network switch and DSL
connection.
*It had worked fine for ages.

All normal checks done including checking all names and removing firewalls.

*I can ping IP adresses OK but cannot name ping.
*Also: I cannot see my own name in the "My network" list.

Previous assistance would indicate the NETBIOS is not working. I have triple
checked the set up is OK: [1] Configured NetBIOS over TCP/IP on the right
network connection. [2]. Set it to "Enabled", not to "Default". [3] Clicked
the OK button afterward.

Still not working. Internet still working fine

Ron Lowe Suggested:
On the 'main computer', go to a command prompt and do an ipconfig /all

In all cases of testing I had shut down my firewall and double checked the
Windows one was still off. This is one of the things I had considered.
Unless you have a DNS server on your LAN, you'll likely still use NetBIOS

Ron,

Man you have been patient with this problem. Is Rons-2ghz one of the problem
computers? Maybe some of the articles I have written / revised of late will
help you find your problem:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html#Components>
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html#Resolution>
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/mysterious-error-53-aka-name-not-found.html>

The Components link above mentions the NetBIOS Over TCP/IP setting, which I note
(in your example anyway) appears to be still a problem, if Local Area Connection
2 is your active connection for Rons-2ghz anyway. There are a couple other
possibilities in there too, so keep reading.

Please don't wait so long between posts, as your oldest posts have already
disappeared from view, and even your most previous post will probably soon. But
keep working on it, we will solve it yet.

From the command line type net view \\computername. If the shares on the target computer are listed then type dir \\computername\sharename. If the filenames are listed then type notepad \\computername\sharename\filename.txt. If the file opens then you have access.

Perform this test between each computer and its peers and tell us what happens.
