When I go on the internet I am able to access sites like
google.c
msn.co
yahoo.co
etc
But, when I try to go to a site like symantec.com I get the Cannot find server, page cannot be displayed
If i use the other computer right beside this one I can get that site. Any suggestions what might be up??

Thanks

Trevor,

I'm having the same problem. I must have been on the phone with Microsoft
tech support for close to three or four hours today, without any luck.
Everthing was working fine until a few days ago, and I think, though I'm not
certain, that it has something to do with an automatic update.

There is a reference article that might be worth looking at for you:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=813444#3

I tried going down the list, item by item, without any luck. Ergo, my call
to Microsoft. We tried a number of things as well, without any luck either.

I can go to most of my usual sites, including my bank and financial sites,
but I can't get to www.smartphonethoughts.com or www.symantec.com or the go
to your wallet portion of wallet.yahoo.com. As far as I can tell, there is
little that the sites have in common, and the secure sites seem to be
accessible to me. I can go to www.celluloco.com, for example, but can't get
to the links to phone information.

I can ping the sites from a command line, and the DNS is resolved, so that
isn't the problem. I get timed out pinging them.

Is there a dll tucked away in all this that may be corrupted?

Any suggestions ? or at least direction to the right forum for this
question.

thanks

Mark

Thanks for the suggestion, Wayne.

That was today's "project". While online with MS tech support, "we"
installed spybot and adaware, ran both, removed a few things, but without
any change in the problem. So far, I've pedaled down the list of things to
try in the KB article cited above, removed every vestige of spyware, removed
my antivirus program, and purged damn near everything left to purge.

It's odd, but everything was running fine a few days ago. I'm pretty sure
that things started to get hinky when I allowed an auto update file to
install.

Despite trying to restore to last week sometime, I was unable to get the
browser to open a few websites (that I know about).

Any luck with this site issue?

I am now unable to run Norton Live Update and finish the install of Antivirus 2003. I have went to the Symantec site, with a different computer and tried some of there troubleshooting tips. But that never solved the problem ethier. When I ping sysmantec.com it returns a DNS of 127.0.0.1, which I believe is a loopback to itself? This happens when I go to the AVG Antivirus site as well grisoft.com.

I am at a loss and considering a fresh install unless someone can figure something out quickly

The tech at MS didn't have any idea what the problem might be?

This indicates that your hosts file has incorrect entries, often because
of spyware/malware. The 127.0.0.1 is your local machine, so apparently
something has set the hosts file to look for Symantec's website not at
its true address, but at the address of your local computer. Find your
hosts file (mine is in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc, but yours might
be somewhere else). Open the file in Notepad; unless you've got a
spyware-prevention type of program or have put things in there
yourself, the only thing that should be there is:

127.0.0.1 localhost

If you find peculiar entries, like misdirecting antivirus sites to your
localhost for instance, then you should remove them. However,
*something* put those entries there and you have to get rid of it. You
may want to call in a professional, or repost here with more
information after checking this out. Here are some great links for more
information about spyware/malware:

Have you tried checking for spyware? That may be a good starting point -
spyware does some pretty obtuse stuff. Try spybot (free) or spy sweeper
(free for one update, excellent real-time blocking program - not just
search). I have solved many very strange problems just by using spysweeper
(www.webroot.com)

Trevor,

I've posted in the Internet Explorer NG, but it appears that I've stumbled
on an answer - at least for me. Are you behind a router by chance ?

Despite struggling with this problem, and trying ALL of the zillion
suggestions that people have recommended, I've come up empty handed. This
morning, I had reason to untangle some wires under my desk, and I unplugged
both my router and my DSL modem. When I plugged things back in a few
minutes later, I could surf all of my usual sites.

I have no understanding of how these things work, but simply rebooting the
modem and router did the trick. Which might make sense somehow: most
websites worked fine. I tried other browsers that should work, e.g. Opera,
Mozilla and ijini, but they each behaved the same way - opening the sites IE
could open but not the sites IE could not open for me.

At any rate, I didn't have a reason to unplug them before, and tech support
never mentioned it. So if you are in the mood to give it a try, let me know
how you make out.

I ended up following the steps to delete entries from the host file. That worked for me. I was then able to finish the Norton Antivirus install and acces the sites I couldn't before.
After running a virus scan, Norton found 51 viruses. This computer was badly infected. I removed all viruses and tested what I could. The system now works fine
Thanks alot to all you guys who have helped with this problem. I do appreciate it

good work, Trevor.

Sometimes the gods smile on us; other times we have to reinstall the OS <g>
