What will you do when there's something on your MAC that you can't
figure out?

"Look out below!"

Errare humanum est
I am so disgusted with Windows Vista and ALL the problems that I have
experienced since leaving XP that I, as of today, trashed my brand new HP PC
and upgraded to a MAC. Microsoft complicates everything and my time is worth
so much more than wasting a day trying to figure out why I can't download or
save files.

Good bye Microsoft 4EVER

Did you install IE8 in early June?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed, is your
subscription current, and is it supported in IE8? What anti-spyware
applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?
Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed
IE8?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Is "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Vista (KB969897)"
listed in Installed Updates?

Just asking for now!! Do NOT use such a Restore Point yet!! => Do you have
an available Restore Point which predates the install of IE8?

If you do the following, does the behavior persist?

=> Start | All Programs | right-click on Windows Mail | select Properties
| Start in <=delete the value here (leaving it empty/blank) & OK your way
out.

NB: Uninstalling IE8 (cf. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700) should
resolve the behavior but you should not have encountered it in the first
place if IE8 was installed properly; cf.
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...er.general/browse_frm/thread/a17d79493eac253d

There are discussions on this general subject but no aparent resolution.
About two months ago I was sometimes prevented from opening photo
attachments on some emails received from the same party and sometimes
could
open them. By this I mean, I would click on the paperclip where a list of
photos would appear and I'd click on on photo and I'd get a message
saying:
"Windows cannot find file name (photo captions used by sender).jpg. Make
sure your typed the name correctly and then try again." Well, of course
I
didn't type the file name; the sender did. I could click on the save
attachments, and once saved to a folder I could open them from the folder.
I forwarded the mail to others, and they report no problems in viewing the
photos. I can also view the photos in the email itself, but it would be
necessary to scan up and down and from left to right to view the whold
photo and the caption would not appear.

As I say, this would be inconsistent. Some email from the same person I
can
open the photos by clicking the paper clip and selecting photos to view
and
it will work fine. However, most ot the time I would have the problem
discussed above.

Today, for the first time I got the following error message: "There was
an
error saving one or more of the attachments. Please check your free space
and try again." There was one photo that I could not save. I have
pleanty
of free space and can view the photo in the email itself.

I've never had these problems before early June of this year.

Good luck.
You will run into problems with the Mac also, but you won't have as much
free support available as for a PC.
It's called cutting off your nose to spite your face. :)

Actually Consumer Reports gives Apple the highest rating for computer
support of any computer manufacturer or software company.

Can you suggest a newsgroup or forum in which Apple enthusiasts are eager to
help other Apple enthusiasts? I assume you would be supportive of Microsoft
enthusiasts trashing Apple there. That is the way the world works, correct?

Hi,

I hope someone can help me, I have been experiencing the same problems
throughout the thread. I am unable to open attachments, when I try to
download files they download, I click the button to run, but nothing happens.

These problems have been intermitant since the summer they seem to come and
go with different automatic updates, and although system restore has worked
in the past it isn't now. I am also getting the error can't save attachment
check disk space, I have plenty of space.

The thread suggests the best fix for this fault is to uninstall IE8, Vista
has been installed on this PC since I bought it. If someone could help me I
would really apreciate it, as I have got course work for college I need to
work on and I'm tearing my hair out.

To avoid confusion, please begin a new thread about your specific problems.
State your IE version and full Windows version (e.g., Vista SP1; Vista SP2)
in your first post. Also tell us which attachments you're having problems
with (e.g., DOC files; PDF files).

Are your default programs / extensions set? Start - Default Programs -
"Associate a file type or protocol with a program" - scroll to find the
extension of the file you're trying to open and highlight it - click the
"Change Program" button - select the program you want to open that type of
file.

You are quoting a very old thread. Much has changed since then.
Uninstalling IE8 is no longer necessary.

I don't understand your reference to "downloading files". That is not done
with your email program.

If you get an error message, copy it and post it here verbatim.

check settings in mail: go to tools, options click on tab named;
Security...uncheck the box do not allow attachments to be saved or opened
that could potentially be a virus. Then try again, or upgrade to windows 7.
Vista is a disaster.

Check desktop commands too. How is your desktop manager program?
..
...check the permission to open file.
In help and support under:
1.Troubleshoot "access denied" when opening files or folders;
2. Troubleshoot "access denied" when opening files or folders;
3.Why can't I run a program without being prompted for permission;
4.Understanding Windows Defender real-time protection; there is a section
under this called: "Add or remove items from the Windows Defender allowed
list",
after this call local Microsoft support they do not know what to do

*...they told me:
to open a new administrator account and transfer everything there and
delete the present one...uha! Vista....what a bomb! I long for my Windows
XP. But that too is not sold any more by Microsoft they want everyone on
Windows 7...what will they do to get us there is the question too.

by the way it worked: the new account works. and the old one is working 2
weeks later and 9 updates from Windows Vista auto update services.
updates fixed the old one and now I have two....not so secure with deleting
it.
happy surfing!

THERE IS NO SOLUTION!!!! ATTENTION ALL - SAVE YOUR TIME AND USE A DIFFERENT
MAIL PROGRAM _ NO MS MAIL OR MS LIVE!!!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Mike,

Tools>Internet Options - Security tab, "Reset all zones to default"

WLM uses the Untrusted sites zone settings (by default). Attachments with an
incorrect file extension could be the cause.

Your AV or firewall could also be blocking malicious attachments.

No problems here on Vista and Win7 for the past 2 years since the beta
releases.

Regards.

That's nonsense. There's no reason for ANY e-mail client to not open
attachments unless one has selected the DON'T OPEN ATTACHMENTS setting in
Tools>Options>Security.

Obviously you are totally wrong. Millions of people use the software very
successfully.
