Unable to mount removeable devices

Both prior to and after instalation of SP 2 no removeable device can mounted
or accessed ( USB hard drives, floppy disks, CD's or memory sticks) by My
Computer or Windows Explorer. The system will read removeable media if the
medi are connected/placed in the appropriate drive and then the system is
rebooted. CD's are listed in My Computer/Explorer as being empty but with
the amount of free space equal to the total space of files that are actually
on the CD.

If one of the removeable devices is opened (in My Computer or Windows
Explorer) the following error message results: ("drive letter"):\ is not
accessible
Incorrect Function

Other XP / 2000 /etc systems have no problems reading the same media...they
can even be read on the problem machine over the network when mounted on
another machine and shared.

I've reset the various device properties under Device
ManagerHardware/DVD/CD-ROM Drives. I've tried replacing the drivers for the
CD drive to no avail. THe problem appears to be with all removeable devices.

Any suggestions out there?

I have the same problem as you do and have tried same remedies and nothing
seems to correct the situation. In reading some other websites there are
many others with same problem so I have come to the conclusion it is in the
XP arena. I would appreciate any information on how to fix this problem.
Having to reboot each time I want to use a removeable device is quite
annoying and sometime not conducive to what I am doing.

I have exactly the same problem accessing media cards and memory sticks form
my Belkin hub meamory reader. In 'my computer' I can check the size of the XD
card but in Properties it shows up as full and I can't store or read
anything. This is driving me crazy. I've spent 6 days online trying to track
down an answear. Any suggestions would be VERY much appreciated.

I have had the same problem and after using HijackThis
(http://www.spywareinfo.com/~me­rijn) have found that the problem lies

with Norton Anti Virus. I have removed Norton from the PC and all is
now working ok. I have installed AVAST as an alternative to Norton
(http://www.avast.com/eng/avast­_4_home.html)
