BTW: Have tried booting XP from the CD and doing a repair install.
One hou later, same result, cannot login with any usernames :-(((
After upgrading a laptop from Win2000 to WInXP Pro I tried to log in using my regular name, password and domain. But I just >get a: "The system cannot log you on due to the following error: The parameter is incorrect. Please try again or consult >your system administrator".
OK, I tried logging on as local administrator, but got the same msg!

But what will a clean install do to my setup? Won't everything get messed
up even more (the upgrade was installed into C:\WINNT, a clean install will
install at C:\WINDOWS, then some programs on the system will have files in
C:\WINNT and some in C:\WINDOWS, and most will not work I guess).
Formatting the system is NOT an option (I cannot loose the data and
programs installed).

And the main question still remains. WHY do I get the "The
system cannot log you on due to the following error: The parameter is
incorrect. Please try again or consult your system administrator" message.

I got no warning when checking the system before upgrading. Someone out
there (someone from MS maybe) should be able to explain the error message,
and maybe how to get passed it.

(I must admit I'm not very found of MS when thing like this happend, I have
used all night trying to save this installation, after what should have
been a very simple straight forward upgrade).

BTW: I know upgrades save unistall info (to revert the upgrade).
Is it possible for me somehow to revert back to Windows 2000?
But how do I do that when I can logon to Windows anymore.

Grrr... A local login windows failing. That should not be possible.

Is there not any way to get passed that "The
system cannot log you on due to the following error: The parameter is
incorrect. Please try again or consult your system administrator" message
after entering a valid username and password? Is it the login that fails,
some service not started or...

From the recovery console I can enable/disable devices and services.
But I need some hints on what I need to try to get by this...

Is there anything else (can one change things like the registry in the
recovery console)?

Had this happend before the upgrade, or after the first login I would have
had some backups to use to recover. But that the first login after an
upgrade fails... well... outrageous :-(

Should just not happend (especially when there was no compability warning)

Is there a way to uninstall the XP upgrade?

I know I can do this from XP when logged in (it saves the last
install), but can I do this when I can't log in (from the recovery
console, or from the CD somewhere).

That could be a way out (and back to the original 2000 installation)

BTW: Is there a way to apply SP2 to an XP installation from the
recovery console (in case SP2 would fix the error when log on)?

I have tried making a splisreamed install CD from my WinXP Pro CD, but
this new CD blue screens (after copying all files and rebooting). The
original CD is a "Select" CD (this is at work). Can't they be
slipstreamed, or is there another reason for this not working.

But I haven't gotten that far. I have installed XP (plain) no SP,
and that won't work. And as far as I know that can't be uninstalled
either when upgrading from 2000. So I really need to now what I can
do to log on (to get passed or remove the cause of the error msg).

Well sometimes the upgrade just doesn't work right, and the only
recourse is a clean install, reinstalling programs from the original
media and data from your backup. I wish I could offer some other
solution but at this point I can't.

I'm not sure if this will help, but read on...
My situation is a little different, if this can't help you, maybe it can
help others who are experiencing my exact situation. Here goes:
After updating the latest windows update, i was prompted to restart. After
the restart, I can't log in. Same as you. However, i restarted yet again,
pressed F8, selected Last Known Good Configuration, and it worked, i can log
in as usual. Problem is, the updates i just installed were gone. Since my log
in was sucessful, the big problem is solved. I went to my profile and removed
the password. Then i updated again, restarted again and this time, i can get
into my desktop coz there was no password! Cool. So i went ahead and put back
the password. Problem solved. Hope this helps. If not you, then other people
with my same problem. :D
