Can anyone shed any light on this?

Dell PC, Win XP.

1. Initial problem with unmountable_boot_drive problem, and PC would not
boot

a. Ran chckdsk /r
b. Ran fixboot
c. Ran fixmbr

All in recovery console mode (this was advice I was given)

I now get fatal error when trying to boot up - unable to load auto check.
Then blue screen and shutdown.

Can anyone offer any guidance on how I overcome this so I can re-start my
PC, otherwise I guess I will have to re-load WinXP
which terrifies me as I will lose a lot of work that unfortunately I did
have backed up (I know idiot me!!)

many thanks
phil

thanks for reply,

I have printed these instructions out on another computer.

I have a start up disk (floppy) - but I cannot get to the start, menu (as
per instructions) as the PC just gives fatal error 'blue screen' and thats
it.

Can I do all this though from the dos prompt on the floppy?
many thanks
phil

Copy is one of the commands that you can use in the recovery console.
Try this part from the recovery console...

3. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER.
copy drive letter:\i386\autochk.exe %WINDIR%\system32

Note The drive letter placeholder represents the drive, such as "D:", that
is running the Windows XP startup disk.
4. Type Y when you receive the following message:
Overwrite C:\WINDOWS\system32\autochk.exe? (Yes/No/All):
5. Remove the Windows XP startup disk, and then restart the computer.

Have you tried booting from the XP CD?

Have you tried Safe Mode?

To start the computer in safe mode

Have you tried Last Known Good?

Feature: Last Known Good
When to use it: When you suspect that a change you made to your computer
before restarting might be causing the failure.
What it does: Restores the registry settings and drivers that were in effect
the last time the computer started successfully.

To start the computer using the last known good configuration
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...l/proddocs/en-us/boot_last_good.mspx?mfr=true

Feature: Recovery Console
When to use it: If using Last Known Good is unsuccessful, and you cannot
start the computer in Safe Mode.

Have you tried Repair?

Feature: Windows Installation compact disc
When to use it: When you cannot start the computer in Safe Mode, neither
Last Known Good nor Recovery Console has been successful, and you have no
backup to use with Automated System Recovery.
What it does: Reinstalls the operating system. You will then need to
reinstall your applications and restore your data files from backups.
Available on: All versions of Windows XP.
