Unable to Load Outlook

H

hrbsh97

This morning when I attempted to load Outlook .. it gave a brief flash and I
saw it as if it were loading and then I got the following error:

Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. The
set of folders cannot be opened. Errors have been detected in the file
C:\Documents and Settings\Brenda\Loca lSettings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst. Quit Outlook and all mail-enabled
applications, and then use the Inbox repair tool (Scanpst.exe) to diagnose
and repair errors in the file. For more information about the Inbox repair
tool, see Help.

Have I lost all my mail, calendar, contacts, etc.?? .. I am trying to keep
positive.

Would appreciate any and all help.

Brenda :)

Milly,

I am still scratching my head & near tears .. unfortunately Outlook never
fully loads .. I click on the icon to execute and it briefly flashes (I see
it as if it were loading) .. then it goes away so I am not able to run
scanpst.exe .. also, this is Outlook 2007. Is there a way to back off my
folders so I won't lose my email, calendar, contacts??

Thanks for answering ..

Brenda :)

You cannot run scanpst.exe whilst Outlook is running, nor is it a tool
accessible within outlook.
Search to include hidden for scanpst.exe, then run it against your data
file, typically named outlook.pst
To backup outlook data simply locate the *.pst files (with outlook closed)
and copy them to another location, eg Documents

Outlook. Okay, but WHICH version of Outlook?
How big is your .pst file?

Tried starting Outlook in its safe mode ("outlook.exe /safe")?

Depends what the repair tool finds/corrects.
MS has a free backup addin available on MS Outlook site
Data should allways be backed up

Milly & DL :) ..

Many thanks for helping me fix my Microsoft Outlook 2007!! .. I am thrilled.
I now have one more question .. now that I have recovered my email and all
is well .. how do I save a copy to a disk? .. how do I back it up?

Thanks again!

My outlook.pst file is nearly 2gb .. is it possible to back that off to an
external hard drive?

Thanks!

Brenda

Then if your version is pre 2003, or you are using 2003 but upgraded from an
earlier version and are still using the old version pst, you have reached
the size limitation.
See here http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=296088

Unless scanpst.exe can repair, then you open outlook and immediately Archive
a significant amount of mail, then Comapact. You will lose data usesing the
tool
