Unable to join previously saved short movies

I saved some short videos using Movie Maker 1,but now that I have upgraded to Movie Maker 2 and I wsh to join these together,and add titles etc.but keep getting an error message saying that the video codecs that are required are not saved on my computer, why is this?
 
What file format are these previous movies? e.g. .WMV . AVI or .MSWMM ?

If they are .WMV or .AVI -- can you play them in Windows Media Player ?
