HELP

Unable to join a WINXP workstation to winNT 4.0 server

Unfortunatly for me the NT 4.0 server does not have WINS
or DNS set up on that system.

This is a fresh install of winXP and it is unable to join
the domain. The errors look like the following. And
yes, this domain is called DOMAIN. We will update the
domain name as soon as we upgrade to sbs 2003. Since this
NT server is playing a critical role in the business, I
am unable to take it down until April 15.

Any thoughts on how I can cause the WinXP system to find
the domain.

the error is shown below.

The domain name DOMAIN might be a NetBIOS domain name.
If this is the case, verify that the domain name is
properly registered with WINS.

If you are certain that the name is not a NetBIOS domain
name, then the following information can help you
troubleshoot your DNS configuration.

The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the
service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a
domain controller for domain DOMAIN:

The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
(error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)

The query was for the SRV record for
_ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.DOMAIN

Common causes of this error include the following:

- The DNS SRV record is not registered in DNS.

Ron,

If you do not have WINS (since this is a NT 4.0 Domain and thus NetBIOS
based).
You need to tell the Windows XP system the name of the PDC in your domain.
You can do this by placing an entry into the LMHOSTS file on PC.

Thank you for the pointers, unfortunatly I did find these
earlier and followed the instructions.
This is at a customer site, where we upgraded the
majority of his win98 systems to XP pro and those
upgraded systems were able to join the domain. This is
the first new install (which several days ago I thought
would be the easiest).

Is there any other reason a XP Professional workstation
would not be able to join a domain?
