I am trying to upgrade ME to XP. When running SETUP I get
the following error : "Library Load Failure ERROR 1157 485
Appname winnt32.exe, Appver 5.1.2600.1106"

SETUP then crashes. Running the Upgrade advisor gives the
same problem.
Any suggestions ?

You may want to try a clean install of XP. It will
however wipe everything from your hard drive. You would
also need ME's CD and maybe ME's CD Key and all your
software and CD key's to install them backed up.

You also need your CD-ROM set to the first boot device in
your bios then boot to the XP CD. Plus make sure your PC
meets the system requirements of XP. That could also be
why its not installing.

What steps did you take in advance of the OS upgrade? Or, did you just
put the XP cd in and hit setup?

Either the CD is damaged or your drive is failing to read it correctly
(winnt32 gets invoked right at the beginning). See if you can borrow a
similar CD and use it with your own Product key. or try copying the root
files and i386 folder from the CD down to a folder on hard disk and then
run the Setup from that

System spec:

Motherboard: ASUS A7V-E, 128Mb RAM, 40Gb HDD
CPU = Athlon 1.2GHz
Windows ME.

It's not my computer but I've noticed from the fault log
that they have been getting "invalid page fault in module
kernel32.dll" errors from the day they bought this machine.

I think the RAM is ok.

I thought Windows ME might be corrupted, that's why I'm
upgrading. Shall I just try a clean install ?

When you say you "think the RAM is ok" is that because you've actually
run a test? If you have *not* run a test, then do so with something
like the free Memtest86 (www.memtest86.com). Allow the test to run for
an extended period - all day or overnight - so all the registers get
tested. If the RAM is bad, replace it. I would certainly opt for a
clean install at this point. However, it will not hurt to also test
their hard drive with a diagnostic utility from the drive mftr. first.
That way, you'll be sure the hardware is OK. If you *still* have
trouble with a clean install after testing RAM and hard drive, then
there are other hardware issues.
