Unable to install application software

" C:\WINDOW\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT The system file is not suitable for running
MS-DOS AND Microsoft windows applications"
I get this error message when I try to install an application package on my
DELL desktop that is utilizing 15% of its hard drive.
