unable to get windows updates

getting this error: Windows Update has encountered an
error and cannot display the requested page, Error
number: 0x80040155
Any ideas? i definitely have something (spyware?) that
keeps trying to change several values in my reg (acording
to ad-watch). could these problems be related?

Ad-watch , as in the AdWatch that is included with paid versions of
AdAware ?
Have you scanned the system with an updated AdAware ?

Reconfigure AdAware for a full scan :

Check for updated definition files .

Boot to Safe Mode : http://snipurl.com/8m63
Run AdAware and allow it to remove what it finds. When done, try
Windows Update again.

yes, most current version of adaware with all updates, did
full scan, removed all. booted in safe mode, still get the
same error. tried doing it as me (the user) and as the
administrator, in safe mode, in regular mode, running out
of ideas. People have recommended wiping everything clean
(after back-up, of course) and reinstalling clean. Sounds
drastic...should I try more other options first?

Sadly, just one anti-spyware program can't do the job. It takes some
"hammering" away with other programs to reveal the nature of the
crudware . " Wiping and reinstalling " can cure the system for now
but won't prevent it's reoccurrence. Downloading and installing
Spyware Blaster will help, though :

Open the Windows Update.log found in the WINDOWS directory with
Notepad and copy and paste the last 20 or so lines into your next
post. (NOTE: for the V5 site the log will be titled
WindowsUpdate.log ... no space between the s and the U)
