Unable to get access to PC

B

Bob_?

I'm unable to connect to a PC on our network. Other PC's on the network can
see it but when attempting to access it I get a [\\Thispc is not accessible.
You might not have permission to use this network resource...] [...Logon
failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this
computer.] But, this PC can see and have access to all the other PC's in the
group.

I've set folder sharing permissions so that it should be accessible... what
else can I try here?

Bob,

This is a well known error. Depending upon the inaccessible computers operating
system (XP Home or Pro?), you may have an easy, or a slightly difficult,
solution.

rats -- nothing works. I tried everything for the XP Home PC and nothing
gives me access?? The ntrights.exe command line returns successful but still
no luck. Is there something else I'm missing?
Thanks

Did you enter the two commands EXACTLY as presented below - case sensitivity
precisely observed?

ntrights +r SeNetworkLogonRight -u Guest
ntrights -r SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -u Guest

Yes -- even though I don't quite understand why we run a "-r Deny" command
last?? Even still I did it, and I still don't have access. Something
interesting, I have a laptop that also runs XP home that I have not trouble
accessing on network? I compared everything that I could and the only
difference so far is that 'non-access' one has Window's Firewall not just
off but disabled... meaning all greyed out? Any other suggestions?
Thanks

Check all components and services on each computer.

Any third party firewalls?

Okay Chuck -- still can't access the PC but at least the message has changed
to "Access Denied" instead of [...Logon failure: the user has not been
granted the requested logon type at this computer.]... hmm? I checked every
component as instructed and it was all within specified parameters. Don't
know why the message change, I can't think of any changes that would have
caused that? Anyway, I still can't get the Window's Firewall to be
enabled... it's still greyed out? (BTW, no third party firewalls here).

It's been awhile since I posted and found some posts that had the response
at top, so I pulled a lemmon. Anything else I can try here?

OK, Bob,

If we're seeing a simple (!!) "access denied", go thru my short troubleshooting
guide.

If no improvement from that, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from
each computer, so we can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely (download browstat!):

Chuck -- thanks for hanging in there with me. I followed the basic
troubleshooting as close as possible without success. So, then I ran the
reports requested. Three pairs of reports:
* A: XP Pro PC - sees all PC's but cannot access 'B' PC
* B: XP Home PC - sees all PC's and can access all PCs (this is the one
that can't be accessed)
* C: XP Home PC - sees all PC's but cannot access 'B' PC

I posted them all:
* http://mapcorp.net/temp/browstat_a.txt
* http://mapcorp.net/temp/browstat_b.txt
* http://mapcorp.net/temp/browstat_c.txt
* http://mapcorp.net/temp/ipconfig_a.txt
* http://mapcorp.net/temp/ipconfig_b.txt
* http://mapcorp.net/temp/ipconfig_c.txt

I can see some problems in the reports but I'm not sure how to read these.
Again, thanks for your help!

Bob,

How about you copy and paste into your next post here. 3 computers is not too
much text. Don't be providing offsite information unless it's really needed
that way.

Hi - is the file and printers opion selected in the exceptions tab on
the client computer?

If firewall is off on the client then you may need to run the network
wizard again on the client computer.
